Ok, is it just me or is it my dog???
I had a really hard time finding a Doggy Obedience class for Callie.
The one closest to my house was totally booked up. I may try again for another session.
The one group I did sign her up with before Christmas was a bit of a disaster. It was filled with Designer Dogs…and my mutt. It was a class obviously for people who had never been around dogs and all the basics were a total revelation to them and their thousand dollar pooches.
I have grown up with pets. Callie and I were getting a bit bored.
This does not mean she was a model student. Far from it. She is still a bit of a maniac. So I really do need some help.
I contacted a place that we have seen featured regularly on the noon news. They want $450 for a personal at home 3 hour session. YIPES.
I only paid a hundred bucks for her!
Vancouverites REALLY bought into the trendy dog ownership. We have a LOT of dogs. People really dig being out with their dogs, it is a very social thing. You BELONG when you have a dog. Well if you have a pure bred. You are a bit of a ‘commoner’ if you have a mutt. I get looks of horror as they slowly back their investment away from my heinz 57.
It is really strange because Vancouver really isn’t a dog friendly place. We don’t allow them on public transit. Most rental accomodation has a ‘No Pet’ policy. Plus we don’t have THAT many dog parks…not fenced in one’s anyway.
Now a lot of dog owners have caused the unfriendliness. We have a lot of folks who don’t pick up their poop or abide by leash laws and so on. It would be nice to see more effort and community thinking from the dog owners as well as non dog owners.
In the meantime I will be searching for affordable dog schooling that isn’t based in the downtown area for my strange looking mutt who like to hold people’s hands with her teeth.

Check out the book ‘Culture Clash’ by Jean Donaldson. It was recommended to me when we got our first Dane, and it was amazing! It’s so good at explaining canine behavior and helps with understanding why dogs do the things they do, how they think, and what makes them tick. I loved it, and honestly just can’t say enough about it - get thee to the library quick!!

Hey there’s one on the North Shore run by a woman named Anne Jackson, she’s very good. She trained the 11-year old golden retriever that my parents own when he was a puppy! I have asked my mom to get back to me with her contact info.

Here’s the website for Ann Jackson’s dog training school:

My mom sends it along with her glowing recommendation and several subtle hints that I should really take my puppy there as well. Hehe.

I thoroughly recommend Ann Jackson’s dog training services. My dog Luca has impeccable manners, amazing patience and a wonderful disposition. Everyone tells me so, especially my vet. Ann gave me a lot of valuable advice six years ago which I still use now with Luca. Please see a photo of Luca on my pet site http://www.treatyourpets.ca. My friend and I sell 100% natural treats for cats & dogs. We also have CUTE doggie sweaters hand knit in British Columbia. Come look!
