Foul Weather Friend

Posted by Mo-Wo | July 24, 2007 .

Last winter we had the water advisory. This summer it will be the garbage strike. If I really love my children here’s another wake up call to big picture junk I can’t ignore.

I surely would have voted for the environment as the BlogHers Act Canada issue. If those damn centralists hadn’t shut down the polls at 9:00PM on Sunday. 13 minutes before I booked on to vote. NB: I’ll save the ‘don’t oppress me’ for another post.

Dear mother earth. I have already confessed that since mothering up myself I have sadly “started living pretty fast and loose with the environment”. But I am about to turn the corner, back home.

There are folks out there setting such a good example. I can’t avoid thinking about all our crap. Now that I have no one to actually collect our crap and make it disappeared I am bent on change, foul weather friend that I am. We’ll try to reduce our disposable diaper use by half with cloth. We hope to burn through our kitchen waste with a composter working overtime. We promise to recycle every bit of paper and all those take out tins I didn’t used to wash.

Is the garbage strike a worry for you? How ’bout you any keen green tips, you can offer. Over here we can use all the help we can get. Because, hey this planet can use all the help we can give it, n’est ce pas? Perhaps this would make for a good BC Issue.

ps… I am especially interested in any raves or warnings about certain cloth diaper brands. I have only used homemades to now and the HappyHeineys, FuzziBuns and many and varied Velour Ass-sacks all seem so dizzying and expensive… I am sort of afraid of them.

At the outset it seems that cloth Diapers are expensive until you figure out what you are spending a month on disposables. I used the dri-line snap to fit and I am now using the Snug-to-fit. I would recommend the disposable liners to make it easier for clean up of bowel movements though and we still use disposable diapers for night time. Try the Discount Diapers. They will help you. :)

I recycle all my plastic even the wrappers and put them in the plastic recycling. In Japan I learned to even rinse off dirty plastic. I wash everything that is recyclable so it doesnt stink.
I japan, after they started a plastic recycling day that included everything to wrappers, our garbage pile was cut to less than half.

Last night I finally watched “An Inconvenient Truth.” If you have not watched the film I suggest you do so A.S.A.P.!

It is a wake up call and a half.

Where we are, many grocery stores have started selling cloth bags to pack your groceries in.

It’s a great idea and really cuts down on the plastic…Extra Foods has some really cheap ones at $.99 each.

I really enjoyed reading this post. During a garbage strike is a wonderful time to promote Green living. What better lesson and wake up call than heaps of garbage sitting around screaming “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Find better ways!” Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see environmental groups that this opportunity to promote this better behavior.

I am happy to hear you have gotten the message so easily and early on in the strike. Way to go, keep up the great work.

As Scattered Mom said in her comment, stores here also sell cloth bags for about $.99. I love this and have several.

Whew, I’ve been so busy this summer…

I’m just out reading and saying hello this evening.

I’d be interested in hearing what you have to say about my last series of posts.
