I Need to Hear about Maple Ridge

My darling but not traveled dh seems to think you have to drive everywhere for shopping and that there is no little areas akin to Main St. or something.

He keeps saying I would miss Vancouver.

I would miss being close to my family..but what else? am I doing that is so Vancouverish?? Sure we do Granville Island and Spanish Banks…..but not enough for it to keep us here.

We have friends with kids the same age as ours who are thinking of moving their and they are working on dh who keeps digging in his heels.

Come on folks….sell him on Maple Ridge!

    Maple ridge is at a transition phase. Its is no longer a rural backwater, that it was even 15 years ago…. But it isn’t Vancouver either…hell its not even a Coquitlam yet. There is limited transit service, and shopping is now were near what it is closer to downtown. There is finaly a large theatre inside the ridge meadows area… but no ridge like theatre. West coast express can take you downtown, but only monday to friday, and only for a limited time window each way. Miss the train…welcome to transit nightmare…the plus side is its still got yarded neighborhoods, where the kids can stays outside playing without that where the hell is my kid sensation.

    yeah, and that is my dh’s argument..but lets see….the only movie theatre we tend to hit is SilverCity Metropolis or Richmond…close by. I haven’t been in an ‘art house’ in years. We rarely go down town unless it is for business.
    Shopping is done at Metrotown..again it is 5 minutes away from us.

    We already don’t live near anything remotely cool!

    Dh works from home so we don’t need to worry about commutes and we hardly see our friends anymore anyway.

    Family is it!

    our work accountant lives there and wouldnt live anywhere else. So he loves it.
    It isnt a bad place at all and really close to everything without having to live in vancouver - which I personally would never do.
    on the negative side it can get a lot more ice and snow in the winter due to being very close to the mountains but if you are heading in the vancouver direction it isnt a problem, if you are heading more up valley this can be, but how often does it actually snow!!

    When I worked in the hospital at UBC we had a technician come to fix our fridge. He lived at Maple Ridge and couldn’t say enough about how he loved it. He worked for an outside company but had enough work at UBC that he came there every day. He didn’t mind the commute and said it was worth it.
    Good luck with your house hunting. A house not far from us, and not unlike our first house which we bought in 1964 for $19,000, sold the other day for $1.4 million. Just a 60 yr old bungalow, three small bedrooms, one bathroom, recently remodelled kitchen but not at all upscale, finished basement but not spectacular. The mind boggles, because just who is buying these basically starter houses for such prices.

    my niece lives in Maple Ridge and I have lots of friends who live in Maple Ridge…it is certainly a growing community….Maple Ridge is a big place you can still find the rural areas if that is what you are looking for or the smaller family communities….if you don’t have to travel for work…I would say it is a great place to live…..you can venture into the city in non peak hours…if there is ever such a thing…so you may not find the swanky shops…but what you will find is country crafts…and yard finds for decorating ideas…you will be close to great parks….Aloette Lake great for camping and day trips….if you are outdoors people there is also Hemlock….great day trips out the old highway all the ways to Agassi….I rode my bike once from Burnaby to Agassi taking the old Lougheed Hwy….part of the trip pasted right by the Westcoast express….

    For me the only draw back would be if I had to commute….I just wouldn’t do it…my time is more valuable to me…

    Those are my thoughts….good luck with it….

    Maple Ridge is a growing community….my niece lives there and loves it. If you don’t have to travel into Vancouver for work it is a great place. If you are outdoors people there is lots to do…..you are close to Aloette Lake which is great for day trips and weekend camping….cycling along the river is fun…or out to Agassi….I have made some great trips along the Lougheed Hwy past the Westcoast Express. Or take the ferry across the river to Fort Langely….so many wonderful day trips…and if you like finding great yard sale finds…that’s the place to be….

    You know I thought I would miss Vancouver when I moved away…but I don’t…it’s nice to visit and shop…at times…but I think the benefits of living in a family orientated community far out weights the shopping or cultural events Vancouver has to offer…..

    Those are just my thoughts…..

    After yesterday when we were cut of and sneered at by a pair of dinks in a jetta while trying to get to our sick cat down on West 4th…I would be happy to get out of Vancouver now.

    Hey, I live in Maple Ridge! I love it and even though I have to commute for work, I’d probably still never move. Kids are growing up in a quiet neighbourhood, and it’s still a relatively safe space…not the scary place that downtown can be sometimes.

    Yes, sometimes people joke about us being from “maple Ditch” but really, we’re relaxed and a little bit of redneck never hurt anybody :-)
