Ah the memories

As I sit here in my pj’s at 4:42 pm, feeling like death warmed over and going mental to the sound of Treehouse running in the background.? I was surfing around and a post from the lovely Vancouver Mermaid caught my attention and gave me a chuckle.

It has been years since I have walked into anything that resembled a night club. Which is sad actually, because I love to dance and miss dancing and and the kids just tell me to stop or the dog attacks me when I dance in the living room.

While I was a bit of a social misfit in high school, I still went to the dances just to dance.? I remember going to a community dance thing in Burnaby with my girlfriends…I think that is where one of them met their first true love!

There was a teen/youth (unlicensed) club downtown for a bit too - the name escapes me at the moment - but we went to dance and meeting guys was a nice plus.

After that was ‘Heaven,’ which is ‘The Odyssey’ still I think. ? When it was Heaven, it was an after hours place.? I still can’t believe my mom would let me - a 16 year old- hop on a bus around 10 at night to go dancing to the wee small hours.

But the music was fantastic and we danced and danced. ? And I met my first love there. ? And he and I danced and danced.

My dancing buddies and I would hit quite a few clubs around town. ? Systems was one. ? We liked the big couches.? Graceland was another.? The Gandy Dancer. ? My then true love new all the one’s that were a bit lose in the ID check.? Tommy Africa’s was a fun one.

But then and after that boyfriend and I parted company, there was two mainstays.? The Twilight Zone and Luvafair.

Not one of those places exist anymore.

In my dancing heyday I was clad in Le Chateau.? Floaty babydoll dresses and black leggings and Fluevog boots.? ? Short, short bright red hair slicked back.

Most nights out, I was there to dance.? To listen to the music.? Talk to some friends and just dance.? I was usually up on speaker or in a corner where I could get the most space and avoid any fights breaking out on the floor.

At Luvafair I would order Gin and Tonics and liked the way they glowed in the dark.

Other nights were for fun. ? More drinking. More laughing.

One memory that always sticks in my head was a night at Twilight Zone.? I had been drinking more than usual and we had all been quite silly..but I think at this point? I still thought I was cool. ? At one point? I staggered off the washrooms.? I was wearing some sort of weird black jump suity contraption.? It required me to peel the majority down to my ankles to perform the necessary functions.

This struck me as quite funny.

In fact I lost it. I started to giggle and could not stop.

So there was I, practically? naked and very vulnerable, snorting and giggling on the loo in a dark and dank night club.? How odd to leave the washroom more hammered than when I entered.? And now getting strange looks from people.? Well, stranger looks!

This morning.? Despite us all feeling and looking like hell, my husband put his arms around me and said that he had dreamed about us going out for a posh dinner and dancing. ? What a nice image.

I will hold on to that right now.? As nostalgia settles about me like a warm blanket.

  1. Great post! It’s actually rare that I go out like that as well… but this night, was a blast.

It also brought some revelations with it as I looked through the pictures the next morning, hehe.
(can you believe I actually posted those?!)

  2. the first club i went to was a Young Adult club called Changes in Surrey, i was 14. at 15 i worked at another one in New West called Paramount (it’s now a strip club), they would have live bands like DOA play there, it rocked. and also went to an after hours place on the corner of Richards at Pacific called The Eclipse / The World which i went to until my 20s.

i used to do the Luvafair and Twilight Zone as well. both hold so many memories. i’ve always been around clubs. i want to own one one day. i still go out regularly to local gigs and shows. i have far too many stories.

  3. LUV-A-FAIR Event at Celebrities Nightclub on September 25-2008

    (80-89 Playlists)
“When the Luv-a-Fair closed its doors for the last time on 2003 it was the last gasp for generations of giddy club kids who craved something edgy alongside their cheap gin and tonics.
For the not yet jaded or weary, it was the Vancouver night scene’s most thrilling spectacle for most of three decades. For a good many Vancouverites from disco age and younger, the heyday of the Luv-a-Fair at Seymour and Drake was the heyday of Vancouver’s club scene. In the late ’70s, early ’80s, it transformed from a strictly disco-playing gay bar to punk rock and new wave sanctuary — while every other club in town played Top 40. Through the dry ice billowing across the dance floor, you might see a mile-long drag queen lounging across one of the speakers. The speakers perfectly symbolized the place’s tongue-in-cheek, see nd-be-seen philosophy. They were the display pedestal for the best-dressed, best-looking, or simply the vainest or highest.”
