North Island Wildlife Refuge

Last weekend my daughter and her girlfriend came to visit. I wanted to do something a little different….or shall I say…something in addition to quadding. My hubby suggested we visit the North Island Refuge. This refuge is were they nurse back to health birds that have been hurt in the wild….there is an eagle there that lost it’s beak to a power line…they have managed to recontruct the birds beak using prothstetics…just amazing….however this bird will never be able to be released into the wild. They have two black bears….owls….turkey vultures….

The setting is great…they have kept it very natural….they have a wonderful area that you go and they give presentations…this room is surrounded by a variety of once living creatures and their stories…..I think it is just an awesome place to take kids….it is evident by some of the viewing rooms that school children have attend this place as the walls are covered with their art work and thank you notes.

A walk around the ground takes you to ponds where you will see a variety of ducks….tree and plants have been identification markers so not only do you see the wild life but you learn about the vegitation that surrounds them.

It truly was a very enjoyable visit…a place I would certainly visit again…and bring visitors.
