The kids and Spring Break

Break from school. Last Friday I picked the girls up and as we navigated away from their school, I heard snippets of conversation revolving around “Whatchoo doing for the break?” My daughter Jess turned to me and asked “Mom, when are we going to go on a vacation?”

The kid stumped me hehehe. Told her I didn’t know, I don’t think it will be anytime soon.

? We cannot afford to, we have never been able to afford to.

We haven’t taken them to the waterslides. We haven’t hung out at Playland just for the hell of it. It’s rare just to take them to the movies.

So? what did we do all these years? I think walks and parks and library, and sometimes swimming. Eat at Macdonalds the odd time. They spent time playing video games and? playing ball in the yard with neighborhood kids. Sometimes I enrolled them in daycamps(only if it was “pay what you can afford”)

Now the girls are older and are coming home with slightly envious stories of “Megan is going to the Island” and “James’ Dad has a cabin” Well…good for them! hehehe We dont even have a car. But all in all they are accepting that we aren’t able to do cool stuff like that. BUT we are happy to spend time together, they help me clean up and I buy them frozen fruit with whipped cream for rare after dinner desert(we don’t do desert) and they are kissing my feet. I? asked Jess “You wanna? go away?”

? “Oh no, no, mom. I didn’t mean that. I know one day we will go somewhere, and it will be so much fun. I still like staying home with you and my brother and sisters, it’s ok” then hurridly added “And with dad too…” giving me the ‘Please don’t tell dad’ look. Then Gayle hugs me around my waist and says “Ya I do too” then trips over her feet and I catch her before she breaks a limb hehehe…

My kids. And school Breaks. I don’t mind that they are home with me. I LIKE that they are. They are extra eyes and ears and I can get them to do the recycling and help with laundry. Gayle thinks running the vaccum is the coolest thing and sending Jess to the store for creamo is such a luxury for me! Plus I get to hear their idea’s and I tell them silly jokes:like the bear that used the rabbit to wipe his butt-lord they cracked right up! It is still bedtime at 9:00pm, and they are all in bed now. I have started this post at I think 10 or 11am and it is now 9:06pm. Having them here for the past week has been nice!

Now ask me come summer break.

Phew, hows that for a ramble?

  1. growing up, it was me and my older brother and my mom. a single mom, worked fulltime, and overtime and still just barely made it by. we didn’t have special things either, never went on vacations etc.

looking back at it all though, it was the time we spent together NOT what we did, that was the special thing. we would watch movies on TV, bake things, make things, play games… it was the fun and laughter and good times like that that stick out in my memories.

i’m sure in the end LOVE like that will always be cherished longer than “a cabin” or “vacations”.

  2. I was just going to ‘ditto’ B…..good memories don’t have to cost money or require travel.

  3. Agreed. We are very lucky aren’t we? The kids DO appreciate that we are wealthy in TONS of other ways, and that is the important thing.

Of course a vehicle would be nice hahaha
