The Vancouver’s Writers Festival
Last night I had the honour of attending ‘An Evening with Guy Gavriel Kay’ as part of the Vancouver Writers Festival. This was a treat for me for two reasons – I needed to escape my mom duties and have a break, and Kay is one of my favorite authors. It was mostly part of his tour to promote his new novel Ysabel, but it was fascinating to hear a successful novelist talking about the craft of writing and the almost ‘stigma’ of being pegged a Fantasy Writer too.
After being introduced by Hal Wake of the CBC and Artistic Director of the Writers Festival, John Burns of the Georgia Straight sat down with him to discuss the novel and the craft of writing. Being that this took place in a small lecture theatre at Simon Fraser University, it felt very intimate and comfortable. Both John and Guy tried very hard to not spoil the book for us folks who have not read it yet. I actually had just picked it up a week ago after my MOM told me about it. It was laying in my purse as the discussion went on.
I am so glad that little events like this take place. SFU and the downtown Library hold lots of little readings and lectures that are open to the public.
Both my friend and I agreed that we need to attend more of these things.
And I was thrilled to have my book signed by the author and to get to say hello.
Oh and another treat was having a drink down at Steamworks in Gastown. That place a really great for drinks and or dinner. They have done a nice job with it. The atmosphere is nice and there is lots of seating and their beer is yummy.

Sounds like an interesting evening and nice night out! I haven’t been to Gastown for ages so I’m glad to know of a good place to try sometime. Yummy beer - sounds like reason enough to me!!!

Hey Crunchy,
I’m reading the old posts and saw this one. I didn’t know GGK was here. We have all his books, including Ysabel. He used to belong to a listserv I was on for years to discuss the works of Dorothy Dunnett. I have a post on my blog about dunnetworks, the name of the list and mention him. Being a Scot, I’m sure you know DD.
Regards
