One of the things I have always loved about Vancouver is that the wilderness is right there.
For example. Yesterday we were out playing with the dog and enjoying the warmth in the sun. I look up and there is a beautiful Eagle working at catching a ride on a thermal. Then we watched all the local crows take flight and shoo him away.
We live in South East Vancouver. A busy city!
We have coyotes living in the bush around our neighborhood. Racoons wander by.
My grandfather had skunks living in his backyard. Move closer to the mountains and you have bear, deer and sometimes cougars wandering by.
I love that.
I love that Vancouver is surrounded by sea, sky and mountain. You just have to look up briefly from your daily grind and be reminded that our life and the city is not the be all and end all. That this would all quickly become wilderness once again if we all went away.
It also reminds you that we need to care for our world. To give the beauty around us the respect it deserves.
I think because of our location, Vancouver will never feel like a ‘real’ city, so to speak. Wildness is all around us…no matter how much we densify and or spread out.
I was down in Yaletown the other day and while it is nice. The buildings are nice…the one’s that are NOT having their facade’s replaced already, anyway….there are lots of hip people and hip stores. They did a good job. Yet, to me anyway, it feels fake. It feels like it is trying to be a Vancouver that doesn’t exist except in people’s minds. It feels like people TRYING to imagine what it is like to live in New York or London. I wish it would just feel like Vancouver.
A city on the edge of the wilderness.

I just returned from Vancouver, and, yes, wild-life of all kinds! Really, beautiful city. And, thank you for the huge shout out here for my business venture!
You are fab!

Ha, you are right - that’s how Yaletown seems to me too - it’s trying too hard!
I do love the fact we have so much variety within just a few hours drive of Vancouver - we really do have it ALL
I do love it here! We live in the best corner of the world, and we really need to appreciate and embrace our natural environment!
I often go to Langley from Victoria to visit family, and every time, without fail, I am aghast at the earth-shattering development happening in Surrey et cetera. What happened to all the trees? Birds fly about as if in a catatonic state of disbelief. I nearly choke to death on fuel emissions in the cloud of rush hour, roadkill is on the side of the road every 1/2 km, and I search endlessly for the seemingly nonexistent presence of pedestrians… what happened to the outskirts of Vancouver? Why are we trying to create something we obviously aren’t meant to be?
The Lower Mainland needs to maintain its gorgeous greenery to be able to continue to offer the same beauty and richness for years to come.
Green is beautiful… let’s maintain it!
