I have volunteered on and off for years…depending on my time and so on.
When I was a teen I was a volunteer guide at the Burnaby Heritage Museum. It was really fun. We dressed up in period costume and did all sorts of things, from baking on a wood stove, to churning butter or making ice cream for the kids.
My last volunteer position was fascinating. I was a board member (and President for a term) of a Dance Company. It was a great learning experience and I tried to use my background in event planning to aid in fund raising and so on. I met amazing people and it was a very rewarding experience.
Volunteer Vancouver has a fantastic program that can match you and your skills with a board of a non profit agency. Visit the site for more information or email Justin Grenier at boardmatch@volunteervancouver.ca. Board Match has a orientation session on June 27 at the Volunteer Vancouver offices from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
Check it out if you are interested in donating your time and skills. Don’t forget, volunteering is a great way to network.

volunteering is definitely rewarding. it is also a big eye opener for people to understand what kind of work really goes into holding events of any kind.
I have been a volunteer for a horse park in Chilliwack for over 12 years. even when I lived in Japan I still volunteered for them by setting up and maintaining a website.

volunteering can be fun, rewarding and a great way to become a part of your community.
oh isn’t it so rewarding. time is the stickler though, never enough time to give away is there. the volunteering section of my resume would be longer than my the rest of my resume if i included everything i have done. haha, and yes it is a great networking tool and way to just meet cool people.
i am all ready aware of that web site but great idea to pass it along.
