Community Spirit vs My Own Selfish Needs

Posted by crunchy | February 15, 2008 .

The housing corp that we rent from wants to build community gardens in the complexes that have the space for them.

One would be ours.

I think this is a grand idea.  We all have teeny tiny gardens and not all get enough light etc to grow much at all.

However, they will be building this IN the one greenspace in the complex.  The ONE greenspace that my kids and I AND the dog love to run around and play in. It beats playing in the court where they run the risk of being run over.

I will be very sad to lose this space…and that is no doubt very selfish of me.   But I am.

I am wondering if all this community spirit and beautification going on will mean that perhaps THIS time they will fix my back patio properly.

Last year they fixed the fence and evened it up..yay.  But balked when I asked them to pave the mud pit over.  Instead they layed down  turf.  Nice..but they put the turf on sand and gravel with no top soil at all.   It died pretty much instantly and is back to a mud pit.

The glass half full part of me will keep dreaming that I won’t have to worry about it and that we will be making plans to move soon enough.

The other part knows this won’t happen and I better make plans to get my yard playable and hangable for my family asap.

At least the community gardens part means that the rumours about selling the property are not quite true…yet.

I think community gardens are a great idea….everyone benefits…and it is such a postivie thing both on an individual basis as well as for the community. Where I use to live in Burnaby, my girls went to a Community Shcool…and right next to it we started a community garden….there was a very committed group who checked on it regularly…a nice shed was built by volunteers…and swings….and a very creative person engraved a gorgeous community sign for the garden….it was so nice….it truly did bring the community together…at harvest time…they would have bar-b-ques and share in the rewards of the garden…..I hope your garden comes to fruition…it will be a positive experience for all involved…..
