Fringe Festival Vancouver. You have only barely, almost missed it!

For the first time in years I returned to the Fringe for live theatre. The world knows many a Fringe festival and I don’t always know if Vancouver’s is the best. Still, I’m no fancy theatre-goer so maybe Vancouver Fringe is perfect for me!

I was delighted to have darkened the door of a live theatre venue after a long slog living’ the drama of two small children. The spouse and I were lucky to find a good pick among the 500 performances this event offers. Our poison, and I use that term somewhat literally, was the visiting play of a friend of mine Doppelgänger.

When I wrote first about this punchy dramatic analysis of the tandem world tyrannies of oil and terrorism I let fly my surprise at how accessible the play was.

WOW I really loved Doppelganger. I mean it was like time travel — four years parenting, four years since I have seen live theatre, and the play four years old itself. I had to use whole new (er dormant) areas of my brain. Which was challenging considering I brought a doozie of a migraine in the door. I think the whole cast were pretty shocked to find that Doppelganger could actually cure migraine; I got the impression that sometimes that was what they were going for, migraine.. But it was such a great and appropos show for us. (For god knows what reason I didn’t expect that.) We both enjoyed it. I think my super-simplified commentary en route home went thus:

“And, so straight up political. Just old fashioned thought-provoking. Not thought-manufacturing.”

Two shows remain in the run of Doppelgänger Thurs, Sep 11 - 5:30 PM and Fri Sep 12 - 9:15 PM.

And, even if you don’t want to try the play I liked maybe take a look-see and get thee to the theatre in the dying days of Fringe Festival. You know a good play can be so good for your head.
