Tech Talk

Posted by crunchy | May 8, 2008 .

I was sent a release about this by  a nice lady from Manning Selvage & Lee (MS&L), and while I am usually a bit hesitant about giving PR people Free advertising on my site…Being that it is CANADIAN and techie…why not.

Fido the mobile phone/wireless service with the ads with the cute dogs is introducing a new service.

FIDO UNOTM is a new wireless service that lets you use your Fido as your home phone, and gives you all the benefits of a mobile phone when you’re not at home. All this with only one phone.

When at home, you can make unlimited calls through your Wi-Fi connection.  These calls are not included in your minutes of your monthly Fido plan.

When out and about, your phones switches over to the ‘regular’ network and plan and it is business as usual.

More and more people are doing away with land lines these days.  I am glad to see services now being offered that recognize that trend.

The set up requires owning some FIDO stuff….

1) A Fido UNO handset enabled for WiFi calling

2) A Fido UNO option in addition to any Fido voice plans

3) A Fido UNO voice-optimizing wireless router

4) A high-speed Internet connection with a minimum speed of 512 Kbps

Simply connect the wireless router to any high-speed Internet modem and turn the handset on. The handset will recognize the wireless router, enabling it to place calls through the Internet. Inside the home, the Fido phone displays a WiFi symbol on its screen when operating on the home network; outside of the home network, the cellphone automatically switches seamlessly to Fido’s network, displaying a GSM symbol on the handset screen, even during your call.

Pricing and Availability

Fido UNO is currently available on the Nokia 6301 retailing for $50 on a three-year plan, at Fido stores across Canada.

Fido UNO offers plans for $15 / month (unlimited local calling) or $20 / month (unlimited local and Canadian long distance) for wireless calling at home, in addition to the regular wireless voice plan. Existing customers can add the service to a current voice plan with the purchase of a UNO-enabled handset and receive the voice-optimizing wireless router free of charge.

I have not used Fido as a network, so I don’t know if they are good or not.   The prices seem competitive with the many basic packages out there, and not charging you for using the phone at home is an awesome deal.

If anyone signs up for this let me know… I would love to hear more about it.

And now, perhaps Rogers and Fido will advertise on my site!

Umm, I am not a big phone talker, so to me having one is merely just an extra means of contact. We have our home line through a package deal from Shaw for HSinterNet/BasicCable/Phone which given the whole package is pretty cheap.

I only have a pay as I go cell phone which only costs me $10 a month, and I never use up the time. I use it more for just messages and emergencies. Paul does the same thing so it is pretty cheap for two of us to keep in touch.

The services now are all so competitive that pricing is usually pretty par. You just have to factor in the deals they nail you with. A 3 year contract is crap. If you break it early they will ding you hundreds. So be sure when signing such deals you are will to eat that 3 years or eat the deal breaking fees. I did that once with two phones from my last relationship, no fault of mine that we split up and wanted to cancel the services but because we did, it cost $300 PER PHONE. OUCH.
