To the Heroes

Posted by crunchy | May 12, 2008 .

When my son came home from school today, he arrived with very sad news.   Miss Cheryl,  the volunteer teacher assistant had died over the weekend.

It was a double shock, because Miss Cheryl was also our neighbour.    Adam and Caity have grown up with her coming to watch them play on warm days.  They have helped her with her groceries.  We helped her with everything from computer troubles to cleaning up little messes and even getting her back to bed.

Miss Cheryl was disabled.  She was in a giant wheelchair.

She had volunteered for over 20 years at my son’s elementary school.  They had just celebrated her 50th birthday and they were working on her receiving an ‘Order of BC’ for all her service to the school and the kids.

I wish I could find a copy of the article about her in the paper.  She was an amazing woman.

We were STUNNED by the news.

We new she had been ill.  But we did not realize it was that bad.

We met her family today….told them how sorry we were.  They were enjoying sifting through the piles of photos and gifts she had amassed over the years.

Teaching and helping children was her one true joy.  She was amazing with the kids.

We were very lucky to have had her in the school and in our complex.

She was fiercely independent and had been happy to find her place here as it allowed her freedom to shop and go to the school unassisted.

She fought to live there.   The organization that runs our complex wanted her out.   It was ‘too big’ a place they said for one person.  Even though it was large because it was designed for wheelchair access.

This is  how our city treats the disabled.

The school will not be the same without her.

She was a kind and gentle voice to the kindergarten kids.

She was an example of what you can do….no matter what challenges you are faced with.

She will be missed.

To all the unsung heroes out there….

Awww this is so sad. Give the kids a hug from us. When one of our kids’ teachers aides fell ill (heart attack while swimming at Templeton Pool) TONS of kids were worried and sad.

Im sorry for all the kids, and her family.
