Shocked about Toxic Shock

I must admit that I have never been a Tampon user.  I will also admit I haven’t paid attention to TSS or toxic shock syndrome, except when reports of women’s death’s by TSS showed up on the news.

It was something heard of and horrified by, but nothing to ‘do’ anything about.

Sites like You Are Loved give us human and lovely faces behind the stories of death due to TSS.  TSS is real, it’s common, and it kills. 1 in 700 women will get tampon related TSS. TSS can strike any woman or girl without warning and can act so rapidly that more fatalities among tampon users are inevitable.   It occurs when the bacteria that we know at Staphylococcus Aureus gets into a woman’s bloodstream.

You can read here for more information on facts and signs and symptoms.

I am not a young woman, but a middle aged one.  However, as a mother and a woman I have grown more and more concerned with the safety of products such as disposable diapers and disposable sanitary napkins and tampons.    I have become more and more leery of what sort of chemicals are being absorbed by my body and my children’s.

This is why I have started to read labels more, use more cloth diapers for my daughter and then was lucky enough to hold of a sample pack of reusable pads from Luna Pads.  This has been crucial to my health,  as  I was experiencing more and more odd symptoms and pain after finishing up my cycle.

We HAVE to listen to our bodies.  We can’t rely on large brands being being watchdogs on their own products.  We have to ask questions and we have to feel totally secure with what we are putting in or on our bodies.   We all need to speak up and make sure brands listen to our needs.

Read their site and spread the word.   Knowledge is power.

I had never heard about TSS until reading this blog post. This is really scary and I am definitely going to be spending the next few hours of my life learning more. Thank you for helping spread the word. You’ve reached at least 1 uninformed woman!

TSS is one of those things that I feel as if I’ve dodged a bullet on. Considering how little was known about it when I was young and foolish.

Thank you for this post. My daughter died of tampon related TSS last summer; she was diligent about hygiene, used only regular tampons and changed very often for fear of TSS. If you are young (under 30) you most likely don’t yet have the antibodies against the toxins so please use 100% cotton tampons only. It’s rayon in the tampons that make toxins. Toxin production begins 2 hours after putting in a tampon and changing tampons doesn’t remove it; it waits inside for the next tampon to keep getting stronger. Your body needs 8 hours tampon free to let this toxin dissipate. This is why you should never, ever sleep in a tampon.
Scientific evidence proves that 100% cotton tampons produce no toxins and are totally safe. These are available at health food stores and online.

Hi, while I agree that one must be vigilant about the chemicals that come in touch with our bodies, I did not have the courage to use products like Luna. My daughter uses such products and likes them. I am way, way past having to worry about such issues, now it’s different issues. Oh Well.
